Sydney Sweeney in Immaculate

Immaculate is a horror film directed by Michael Mohan from a script by Andrew Lobel. Sweeney plays Cecilia, a young American nun who joins a remote convent in the Italian countryside and discovers that she is pregnant, although she has kept her vow of chastity.

The project has an unusual history. Sweeney first auditioned for it as a teenager, in 2014, and the film was never made. Years later she found the script again, acquired it through her company Fifty-Fifty Films, and produced it herself. She brought in Mohan, with whom she had worked on Everything Sucks! and The Voyeurs. The film was shot in Italy.

It had its premiere at South by Southwest in March 2024 and was released by Neon the same month. The last scene, one long close-up on her face, is the most discussed moment of the film and of her performance.
