Sydney Sweeney in Reality
Reality is the first feature by the theatre director Tina Satter, adapted from her stage play Is This a Room. Every line of dialogue comes from the FBI's own transcript of 3 June 2017. On that afternoon agents arrived at the home of Reality Winner, a 25-year-old former Air Force linguist and intelligence contractor, to question her about a leaked classified document.
Sweeney plays Winner. The film stays almost entirely in one bare room of her house in Augusta, Georgia, and runs for less than an hour and a half. There is nowhere to hide. The tension comes from hesitations, from small talk about pets and exercise, and from the slow moment when she understands that the agents already know the answer.
Reality had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2023, and HBO released it a few months later. Many critics called it the best performance of her career to that point.
