A cream leather jacket, crisp at the collar and softened by a ruffled fabric bloom at the shoulder, does most of the talking here. Her hair falls in a loose center part, a few strands drifting free across her cheek, and her makeup is kept warm and simple: softly shadowed eyes, flushed skin, a glossy red lip. She turns slightly away from the camera, chin lifted, gaze steady on something just off to the side, her mouth held in the faintest suggestion of a smile. Behind her, the navy step-and-repeat of the Toronto International Film Festival repeats its lettering in white, blurred just enough to keep the focus where it belongs. The light is even and generous, the kind that flatters without flattening, catching the gloss on her lips and the sheen of the pale jacket.

This photograph was taken at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, at the world premiere of Eden. Ron Howard directed the film, and Sweeney plays Margret Wittmer, one of the settlers on the island of Floreana. She walked the carpet with the director and with her fellow cast members, among them Ana de Armas.

Sydney Sweeney is the American actress behind Cassie in Euphoria and Olivia in The White Lotus, and the lead of films such as Anyone But You and Immaculate. Read her story.
